Immersive Computing: What to Expect in a Decade?

Computing technology is advancing at an unprecedented speed, reshaping both our daily lives and the global landscape. In this article, we delve into the profound impact of immersive technology on society, focusing on how it can represent and interact with users. Starting from the current virtual reality (VR) technology, we envision that VR will integrate with artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technologies, and eventually achieve a personal clone of individual users that can perform most of the tasks on behalf of users. By roughly dividing the progression of immersive technologies into three phases, we discuss their prospective applications while emphasizing the potential research challenges to be addressed.
