Speech Systems

William R. Culbertson · 2024

This chapter covers the basics of the functional roles of three subsystems of speech: respiration, phonation , and articulation . All three subsystems function as a concerted unity to produce the wonderfully variated manners of speaking. With seemingly little or no effort, we quickly inflate our lungs and let the air out in concert with the interplay of our vocal tract musculature. Since the majority of speech begins with an outward flow of air from the lungs to the mouth and nose, we will begin with the respiratory power source and move distally to the contributions of the laryngeal, oral, and nasal cavities.
