Radiochronometer Applications in Dating

Ibrahima Sakho · 2024

This chapter discusses the properties of some radioelements used in radiochronometry. Absolute dating aims to quantitatively estimate the age of rock formations, fossil organisms, climatic events, etc. This method is based on the principle of radioactive decay. The chapter provides a brief overview of experimental research into the carbon-14 dating method according to Guibert. The dating method based on potassium-40 filiation is used in geochronology to date the formation of rocks containing potassium, obviously, and capable of retaining the Argon-40 formed. In the case of Potassium-Argon, the measurement of argon-40 produced over time is carried out on an aliquot of the sample by mass spectrometry. Among the most widely used methods of radiochronometric dating using a coring system are the 210 Pb, 137 Cs and 7 Be radiochronometers. Uranium and thorium family imbalance method can be used to determine the age of certain carbonate formations of animal or sedimentary origin.
