Using Advance Organizers to Design Presentations
Bruce R. Joyce, Emily F. Calhoun · 2024
David Ausubel deals with the improvement of reception learning. That is content is received from a source rather than being mined by a learner&s;s action. If you reflect for a moment on the other models in this book, they all help the students become engaged in actions that result in learning of some or several types. Ausubel asks the student to pay attention and concentrate, but the presenters of material need to organize it in such a way that it facilitates efficient reception. (The presentation can be through a lecture, written material, or mediated as embodied in a film.) Ausubel stands unabashedly for the mastery of academic material through receiving presentation of that substance. Meaningful verbal learning is his medium. Ausubel speaks to teachers when they need to organize and convey large amounts of information—and sees the acquisition of information is an important goal of schooling. His stance applies to situations in which the teacher plays the role of organizer of subject matter and presents information through lectures, readings, and media. Ausubel maintains that a person&s;s existing cognitive structure is the foremost factor governing whether new material will be meaningful and retained. We augment that structure with organizers.
