His early education in various schools in Mysore laid the foundation for his later academic and professional achievements. The influence of his parents, especially his father, a medical officer, inspired him to view medicine not just as a profession but also as a calling to alleviate the suffering of patients. After completing his medical education at Mysore Medical College, Dr. B.K. Venkataraman embarked on a career in academia. His diverse roles, from a lecturer in Anatomy to later specializing in Ophthalmology, showcased his versatility and dedication to expanding his knowledge base. The pivotal moment in his career came with the proposal to start a Dental College in Bangalore. Driven by a sense of responsibility, he played a crucial role in the establishment of the college and subsequently pursued advanced studies in USA and UK. His association with international stalwarts in the field of dentistry underscored his commitment to staying at the forefront of advancements. The introduction of Oral Medicine in the curriculum, the initiation of the postgraduate program in MDS in Oral Medicine, and his multifaceted roles at Government Dental College and Hospital, Bangalore, demonstrate his vision and leadership. His election as the President of the Dental Council of India from southern India further solidified his impact on the dental community. Post retirement, Dr. B.K. Venkataraman continued his service in Libya and later as the Principal in various dental colleges, leaving an indelible mark on the institutions. His passion for teaching and sharing knowledge culminated in the publication of the “Textbook of Diagnostic Oral Medicine,” a valuable resource for future generations. His collection of histopathology slides, his dedication to teaching oral histology and oral pathology, and his desire to publish a second edition of his book showcase a man committed to the continuous advancement of his field. The coincidence of Dr. B.K. Venkataraman’s passing on Teacher’s Day adds a poignant and symbolic layer to his legacy.
