Face recognition has been observed to have different accuracy for different demographic groups. Media coverage of face recognition has used words like "racist" and "sexist" in headlines of articles covering this. However, relatively little is known about why face recognition would have different accuracy for different demographic groups. This chapter summarizes results of multiple studies that seek to identify the underlying cause for this result.
