Passive inductors are not integrable as they are bulky, noisy, and have large power consumption. Integrated designs are the major requirement for all high-performance systems. Active inductors based on the gyrator principle which offers several advantages like easy integrability, low power consumption, less silicon area, low cost, low noise, etc. Therefore, inductors based on the gyrator principle are preferred over other designs. Gyrator is a two-port nonreciprocal network, which inverts impedance. When one port of gyrator is terminated by capacitor, then network is known as a gyrator-C network, which simulates inductor at other port. The active inductor based on gyrator offers several advantages like easy integrability, low power consumption, less silicon area, low cost, low noise, etc. over other inductor designs. In this study, a review of all active inductors, which are based on the gyrator-C principle, is presented along with their design approaches.
