This chapter discusses authors' research on tailorable remote assistance in the manufacturing industry. It describes the component-based design of RemoteAssistKit (RAK) from a technical perspective. The chapter summarizes the results of interviewing employees from the manufacturing industry about their current remote assistance practices and requirements for remote assistance. It discusses how domain experts from the manufacturing industry tailor remote assistance. The chapter explores how remote assistance is tailored by using an experimental simulation with RAK conducted at a technical college for plastic manufacturing. The experimental simulation concerns user requirements for nonverbal guidance, sharing of machine sounds, high-resolution views for remote quality control, and establishing workspace awareness in large industrial task spaces by using multiple cameras.
