A Remote Entry System for the CDC 6600

This report describes the remote entry system developed at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences for the Control Data 6600 computer. It services both interactive time-sharing (CDC INTERCOM) and batch job processing (NYU XREMOTE). Central to the system is a 16 bit Honeywell DDP minicomputer which is interfaced to the CDC 6600 (see Figure 1). The DDP can be conceived as the "front end" of the larger computer serving the dual functions of l/O controller and temporary storage. l/O in this sense includes both physical input/output and such preprocessing as error checking, control character processing, code translations, character blocking, etc. By moving these functions out of the central computer, we have gained considerable flexibility.
