Toward Faster Search and Rescue: Understanding Terrains with Reeb Graphs

Maxwell Simpson, Jory Denny · 2023

An obstacle for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations is challenging terrain. Mathematical analysis can give insights to craft a cohesive search plan. We propose applying algebraic topology, namely a Reeb Graph, to compactly represent the core pathways through the terrain. Our algorithm pre-processes a terrain to exclude inaccessible portions and then spatially embeds the Reeb Graph for use. We compare two unique ways to embed the Reeb graph based on Euclidean distance and work. Finally, we validate the approach using both artificial and real-world terrain data, e.g., Mt. Everest.
