A Catalog of Non-Functional Requirements and Patterns for Microservices Migration

Non-functional 1 requirements (NFR) such as high availability, redundancy, and scalability are cited in the literature as motivations and benefits to migrate from a monolithic architecture to micro-services (MS). The use of patterns can help meet these requirements. However, it is unclear which NFRs should be prioritized prior to the migration process and what positive and negative impact the choice of certain patterns may have on these requirements. A catalog of NFRs and patterns could help in planning migrations from a monolithic architecture or restructuring of an existing MS architecture. This study describes the key NFRs that are important in scenarios of migration from monolithic systems to MS, as well as patterns that can help operationalize these requirements. To this end, we first look for the motivations and driving forces that justify migrations from monolithic systems to MS and map them to NFRs. We then identify patterns in the literature that can be used to satisfy the NFRs and the implications of choosing each pattern (trade-offs). Finally, the information is compiled into a catalog that is evaluated through its implementation in scenarios of migration or restructuring to MS.
