Information-Centric Wireless Sensor Networks-Based Multimedia Content Caching and Dissemination

Xiaonan Wang, Gaoyang Wu · IEEE Sensors Journal · 2024

Multimedia traffic generated by wireless sensor networking (WSN) requires real-time dissemination to satisfy high-quality service requirements, such as disaster prediction, but the current end-to-end Internet architecture cannot achieve this goal due to redundant transmissions of content. In this circumstance, a typical information-centric paradigm—the named data networking (NDN), is introduced to WSN, called information-centric WSN (ICWSN), so that in-network caching and aggregation can be exploited to help shorten distances between users and content and eliminate transmissions of redundant content. In this article, we propose an ICWSN-based content caching and dissemination framework and aim to leverage learning automata to support in-network caching and aggregation, ultimately reducing content transmission energy consumption, delays, and failures. The experimental results have shown the feasibility and advantages of the proposed framework.
