Introduction to Bayesian statistics
Arthur M. Glenberg, Matthew E. Andrzejewski · 2024
For about 100 years, Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) has been the gold standard of inferential statistical procedures. NHST is what you have learned in this book: Formulate null and alternative hypotheses, decide on a value for α, determine the rejection region, etc. But, during those 100 years, scientists and statisticians have discovered problems with NHST, and some of those problems can be solved by using a different inferential framework called Bayesian statistics. This chapter begins with a review a few of the problems with NHST, it then introduces Bayes’ theorem (the backbone of Bayesian inferences), and finally we will see how JASP can be used to make Bayesian inferences. One of us (AMG) believes that Bayesian inferential procedures will become the gold standard over the next couple of decades (and hence it is worth your while to learn them), but one of us (MEA) is less certain.
