IPv6 was built to improve on existing IPv4 protocol and it is known to have multiple benefits over IPv4. One of the biggest advantage is the large address space which would solve the issue of address scarcity that is associated with IPv4. Another benefit that has been marketed is the security enhancements but new protocols being introduced by IPv6 also pose security challenges. In this regard, multiple studies have been conducted to find and test mitigation techniques related to IPv6 threats. Research has also been conducted to analyze why IPv6 has a slow adoption rate and it has been found that organizations do not feel the need to deploy it in their networks. Furthermore, they identify IPv6 as a complex protocol and challenging to implement. It has also been discussed that the IPv6 protocol is not being deployed widely due to security concerns. This study thus concentrates on the various techniques to address IPv6 threats in local enterprise networks. In this paper, we will analyze several measures to secure the IPv6 local area networks and their strengths as well as their limitations will be highlighted. This will help organizations obtain a better overview of what need to be considered while deploying IPv6 in their networks. The study also helps to identify the issues that still need to be further tackled and allows future researchers to direct their research pathway.
