The Challenges and Implementation of the LPO Auvergne‐Rhône‐Alpes Naturalist Information System

Émilie Kohlmann · 2024

Biodiversity information systems (BISs) manage naturalist data and are widely used by public bodies and nature protection associations. The work carried out by the Ligue pour la protection des oiseaux Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes (LPO AuRA, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes League for the Protection of Birds) to protect species, sites and habitats requires a sound knowledge of the fauna. The LPO also works to raise awareness of the challenges of biodiversity loss, and the collection of observations is a rewarding entry point for contributors. This chapter presents the evolution of observation management systems, from the paper forms collected since the 1970s to the current information system. It describes in detail how the various players use the information system: network management, observation collection, validation and data exchange with other BISs. Naturalist data are transmitted to third parties with which the LPO signs an agreement defining the terms and conditions of these exchanges.
