Vulnerability Assessment and Mitigation Strategies for Satellite Communication Systems Under DDoS Attacks

Ayoub Toubi, Abdelmajid Hajami · 2024

Satellite communication systems play a pivotal role in modern global connectivity, serving critical functions in telecommunications, broadcasting, and data transmission. However, their reliance on interconnected networks exposes them to the growing threat of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. This research focuses on conducting a comprehensive vulnerability assessment of satellite communication systems in the face of DDoS attacks and proposes effective mitigation strategies to safeguard their performance.Through a thorough examination of potential vulnerabilities, this study identifies key weaknesses that make satellite communication systems susceptible to DDoS threats. Leveraging this analysis, the research then introduces a set of mitigation strategies designed to fortify the resilience of these systems against disruptive attacks. These strategies encompass both proactive measures, such as network segmentation and traffic filtering, and reactive responses, including anomaly detection and rapid incident response.Furthermore, the study investigates the performance impact of DDoS attacks on satellite communication systems, assessing the degradation of service quality, latency, and throughput. By simulating attack scenario, the research quantifies the extent of these performance disruptions and explores the implications for users and stakeholders.Ultimately, this research contributes to the development of a robust framework for securing satellite communication systems in the face of DDoS threats. The proposed vulnerability assessment and mitigation strategies provide a foundation for enhancing the resilience of these systems, ensuring their continued reliability and functionality in an era where cyber threats pose an increasing risk to critical infrastructure.
