The controller forms an important part of the software-defined networking concept. The primary task of the controller is to be aware of the topology and the connected devices and to lead the data routing logic on which the devices in the data layer depend. With the expansion of SDN implementation, it is important to ensure a high level of response and availability of services provided in this way. The controller is a tool that can greatly influence the availability and speed of data routing or dealing with a potential outage in the network. A wide range of SDN controllers are currently available, but not all of them are maintained over the long term. This article provides an overview and both an analytical comparison and a comparison of individual, most used SDN controllers based on the research of their deployment in a test environment in different topologies.
