Main Memory And Memory Addressing

Douglas Comer · 2024

This chapter introduces one of the key topics of computer architecture: main memory. The chapter examines memory addresses and the concept of byte addressing. It describes the fetch-store paradigm, and explains how the underlying hardware organizes memory into words and provides a byte interface. Most important, the chapter describes consequences for software engineers. The next chapter expands the discussion to consider virtual memory.
