Storage: File Systems, Blocks, And SSDs

Douglas E. Comer · 2024

Previous chapters focus on main memory, the virtual address spaces that an operating system provides for applications, and memory caches. This chapter considers another primary component of a computer: storage. The chapter explains the ideal of long-term persistent data storage, the hardware mechanisms used for storage, and the operations that storage hardware offers. The chapter explains the most common use of storage facilities: storing data in the form of files. It examines the block-oriented interface the hardware uses, and briefly describes how file system software uses block storage to store files.
