Open RAN : Journey from Concept to Development

This chapter provides an overview of how Open RAN standards are created based on the industry stakeholders' requirements, the different organizations that develop Open RAN standards along with the collaborative relationships, and how interoperability is ensured in practice. It describes in detail some of the organizations, including O-RAN Alliance and Telecom Infra Project, that are developing Open RAN standards and the Open RAN product group. The concept of open source is often implicitly implied when discussing the concept of Open RAN. The chapter outlines the definition of open source, the role of open source in the telecommunications industry today, the myths of open source, and the differences between open source and Open RAN.
