Project Executing

Alec Waterworth, Carl Gavin · 2024

In this chapter, the Executing stage of a project is explored. Having developed a plan, that plan must now be executed. We know, however, that change is an inevitable part of project life, and thus much of the focus in this chapter is on how to identify the need for change and enact it. We discuss why project variances against the plan occur and how these can be detected (termed ‘project monitoring’) and responses to it managed (termed ‘project control’). We examine earned value analysis as a technique for measuring performance of the project over time. We also address how performance should be reported to the project’s stakeholders. Finally, we discuss the importance of effective communication in identifying issues early and resolving them effectively.
