Connected Components Labeling Algorithms: A Review
Yingnan Zuo, Danyang Zhang · 2023
Connected Components Labeling (CCL) is a technique to detect different objects in an image by assigning each object a unique label. CCL has been widely used in many applications. For example, in Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CADx), CCL is a vital preprocessing step in detecting pulmonary nodules in lung computed tomography (CT) images, and discovering masses in mammographic images. Over the past decades, a number of CCL algorithms have been proposed in literature. In this paper, these CCL algorithms are classified into contour tracing CCL algorithms and raster scan CCL algorithms according to their scanning order. This paper serves as a survey to review the major CCL algorithms in each category and explore the future direction in this research field.
