The demand for video processing, storage, and transmission is a topic of growing interest due to the impacts it has on our everyday lives, whether for work or entertainment. Video coding formats arise to cope with the intrinsically related issue, allowing a better compromise between coding efficiency and video quality. Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is the state-of-the-art standard currently available, where its compression capabilities come at the cost of an increased computational complexity. For that matter, a hardware design targeting VVC is suitable for accelerating its processing. Two of its core components are Residual Coding and Entropy Coding. Thus, one may wonder how to better understand these steps and provide a tailored hardware design for them. To answer these questions, this work conducted statistical analyses to derive future hardware implementations of the VVC blocks. In addition, based on the statistical findings, this work introduces a partial hardware design for VVC Residual Syntax Elements Coding.
