Devices to Display Augmented Reality Experiences

Osslan Osíris Vergara Villegas, Vianey Guadalupe Cruz Sánchez · 2024

Displays are one of the main components for implementing an AR experience. The display is the technological device where the augmented scene is presented to the user. This chapter presents a taxonomy of AR displays, divided into head-mounted and non-head-mounted displays. Head-mounted displays (HMDs) include the non-see-through, optical see-through, and video see-through. In contrast, non-head-mounted ones include the handheld and spatial displays. Mobile phones and tablet computers are included in handheld devices, and direct augmentation, video see-through, and optical see-through are included in direct augmentation. A description and a brief history of each of the categories is presented. Moreover, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of using each device is provided. Generally, any display employed to augment a scene must ensure an almost normal vision of the environment to guarantee the user has a comfortable experience.
