Clean-Slate and Cross-Layer IoT Security Design

S. Rajarajeswari, N. Hema · 2024

Building secure systems for the Internet of Things (IoT) can only be achieved through a thorough understanding of the needs of such systems. The state of the art lacks a systematic analysis of the security requirements for the IoT. Motivated by this, in this chapter, a systematic approach is given to understand the security requirements for the IoT, and different scenarios and outline potential threats and attacks within the IoT. Based on the characteristics of the IoT, the possible threats and attacks can be grouped into five areas, namely, communications, device/services, users, mobility, and integration of resources. Then, the existing security requirements are examined for IoT presented in the literature, and details of the proposed approach for security requirements for the IoT are given. The chapter also discusses some of the security designs like cross-layer designs for IoT systems.
