This chapter provides an extensive survey on the recent denoising techniques to remove impulsive noise in medical images like MRIs and X-rays. It summarizes the progress that has been made over the years in the filters and their application involving medical image processing. Initially, different noise models are presented and then various denoising filters are discussed and compared their denoising performance in medical images. Further, their practical implications and their application are presented. This chapter also presents the mathematical expressions/flowcharts of filters for better understanding. This chapter also includes a thorough analysis of the filters by stating their strengths and weakness. Extensive comparisons are made to cover all the denoising filters and their results. The denoising quality is assessed by various quality metrics such as mean square error, peak signal-to-noise ratio, and structure similarity metrics. The time complexity is noted by noting the time taken by the particular filter for denoising. With the help of this chapter, researchers working in the image processing can quickly do their literature survey on the denoising and will get a very good comparative analysis of salt-and-pepper noise removal techniques.
