Systematic Review on the Use of Immersive Technologies in Healthcare

Parul Gahelot, Rishu Chhabra, Gurjinder Singh · 2024

Physiotherapy decreases pain and improves anticipation. Finding and maximizing mobility improvements for a higher quality of life with prevention, treatment, habitation, and rehabilitation is useful. Immersive technology has been adopted and welcomed by several industries as it becomes more accessible, affordable, widespread, and ubiquitous. Computer technology is used to create these virtual and simulated applications for mixed reality. Additionally, it is incorporated to improve treatments and healthcare. It would be beneficial to enhance and support medical AR (virtual reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) applications. This literature review analyzes simulation-based activity for surgery, neuroscience physiotherapy, and education in healthcare. This narrative summary aims to describe the XR (Extended Reality) which inherits the VR, AR, and MR (Mixed Reality) advances in technological optimizations in treatment, followed by a detailed examination of the use of XR technology in medical treatment using therapies, which includes surgeries, consultation, education training and rehabilitation of the patient. Furthermore, the paper presents limitations and conceivable uses of the immersive technologies’ solutions published in the literature.
