A Critical Review of Digital Experiences in Cultural Institutions: Is Digital Experience a Traction or Distraction Strategy?

There has been an increase in the use of digital technologies for the display of art and cultural heritage in cultural institutions in order to enhance the experiences of their visitors and attract new audiences. Due to the introduction of new technologies and the ongoing improvement of existing ones, digital cultural experiences are transforming at a rate that is much faster than ever before. Therefore, it is necessary to acknowledge the current utilization of digital technologies in cultural institutions, what they are used for, and what the drawbacks of using these technologies are. This article reports on the recently implemented digital approaches spanning 11 categories in cultural institutions and analyzes the opportunities and challenges presented by these approaches. This article contributes to the ongoing discussion about implementing digital technologies in cultural institutions and challenges those institutions to use digital technologies in a responsible manner.
