Breathless: A Sensor-to-Sound Performance

Mona Hedayati · 2023

This proposal draws on the conglomeration of several layers of affective markers collected from my body while watching the audio-visual feed of protests in Iran for a period of 6 months. Statistical analysis and machine learning were the techniques I implemented to process biosignals collected using wearable physiological sensors and audio recordings of my respiratory gestures. The goal for such processing was to make sense of the time-series data towards a sound performance modulated by my live biological signals activated by watching visually manipulated footage of the protests. While adopting a critical and problem-oriented lens, my project draws on a critique of data-driven media art practices that make unquestionable use of data processing techniques to open up grounds for alternative treatments of data that builds critical possibilities.
