Internet of things (IoT) has become a common place nowadays. It has revolutionized human lifestyle by reducing the gap between physical and digital worlds. IoT provides seamless integration of devices and services into physical world to help its inhabitants or users to achieve their tasks smoothly. It is now widely accepted fact that our daily lives, jobs and the way we interact with the environment are substantially influenced by IoT. IoT has applications in numerous sectors of life including healthcare, transportation, industrial, business, homes and offices automation. Currently, the most demanding concern with IoT is safeguarding its users, devices and the data exchanged between them. On one hand, IoT is making humans lives comfortable, smooth and easy, but on the other hand it may make their lives more miserable in case of security breaches. Security breaches in IoT may have terrible outcomes ranging from monetary losses to reputational damages and life threats. Therefore, ensuring the security of IoT devices and their data has become an important concern. Authentication mechanisms serve as the cornerstone of IoT security, ensuring that connected devices within the IoT network are trustworthy and can only access authorized resources. Based on aforementioned facts, this paper presents a comprehensive review of recent research in IoT security, specifically focusing on authentication schemes at various levels of the IoT architecture.
