This chapter is devoted to the successful installation of the interactive Python environment and the introduction of basic Python functionality. Instructions for downloading and installing SideFX Houdini software are provided. For novice users, Houdini can be an intimidating environment. Optional instructions are provided for creating a custom Python environment for the Houdini editor. The Python shell is introduced as the first tool for interacting with Python. The Python shell can be used for calculator functions, displaying messages, and creating variables. Because the Python shell only allows the execution of one Python command at a time, instructions are provided for the creation of simple Python scripts.
