Reading and writing data to and from external files are important responsibilities all technical artists must perform. These jobs are performed with a four-step process: the external file is opened, data is read and/or written to the file as a single Python object, the external file is closed. The Python details for performing these tasks are described in this chapter. Accessing external data responsibly is just as important. Instructions for catching and handling exceptions during external file access are included as well. The chapter also explains common, technical artist data structures including JSON and XML . Instructions on serializing, or pickling , Python objects are also included.
