Numerous individuals have long been fascinated by covert communication across a network of connections. It has enticed not only trustworthy entities to communicate covertly with one another, but also attackers/hackers to develop techniques to discover and disclose information and to exploit the system in ways that violate security protocols. Employing covert channels to transport data in a secure manner. Encryption merely prevents unauthorised entities from decrypting interaction, whereas covert channels seek to conceal the interaction's actual presence. These channels were first identified as a security risk on monolithic structures, such as mainframe computer systems. In recent years, computer network protocols have shifted their focus to covert channel routes. The Internet's vast quantity of information and diversity of diverse protocols make it an ideal high-bandwidth medium for private communications. This survey provides an overview of the mechanisms employed for the detection and mitigation of covert channel-specific attacks that may compromise the confidentiality of the data being transmitted between two sources. Finally, the concluding remarks along with the future possibilities of the covert channel attacks are indicated.
