Pictures Do Not Speak for Themselves
Jonathan W. Hak · 2024
Abstract This chapter asserts that pictures do not necessarily speak for themselves, no matter how compelling they might be. Rather, they must be viewed and interpreted with an understanding of the context in which they were created, the perspective chosen by the photographer, and the narrative they are being associated with by their proponent. Images should be viewed with caution and frequently require testimonial support for proper content comprehension. This chapter states that in certain cases, evaluation, interpretation, and testimony by a forensic imagery expert may be required to fully understand what images have to offer as well as their limitations. This includes the need to technically assess digital video images for such issues as compression, resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio anomalies. Additionally, this chapter outlines the role of forensic video analysis and various image processing and analytical techniques that can be employed to maximize the evidential value of images.
