Many senior adults live independently or are distanced from their younger family members for various reasons, exposing them to the risk of falling. Falls among the elderly can lead to serious health complications, and in some cases, they can be fatal. An Internet of Things (IoT)-based fall detection and warning system has emerged as a crucial tool for caregivers dealing with the elderly population. This innovative device employs accelerometer and gyroscope sensors to continuously monitor an individual's movements. By comparing these movements to predefined thresholds, it can detect potential falls. When a fall risk is identified, the device swiftly sends an alert, providing immediate assistance to the elderly person in need. The results of implementing this technology have been highly promising. When a potential fall is detected, the system sends alerts to designated caregivers or family members, ensuring they are informed about the situation. Simultaneously, the device prompts the elderly individual to seek help promptly. This dual-notification system ensures that immediate attention is given to those in need, significantly reducing the risk of severe health consequences resulting from undetected falls. To achieve this functionality, the device employs a Node MCU microcontroller and an MPU6050 sensor module. The MPU6050 module houses both an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The accelerometer provides critical three-axis data on angular parameters, while the gyroscope aids in orientation detection. By continuously analysing acceleration patterns and comparing them to predefined thresholds, the device effectively identifies potential falls. Once a fall is detected, the system promptly notifies the individual via email, thanks to the integration with the Node MCU microcontroller and Wi-Fi connectivity. This email notification serves as a vital lifeline, ensuring that timely assistance can be provided to the elderly, ultimately preventing life-threatening situations. The IoT-based fall detection and warning system, utilizing accelerometer and gyroscope sensors, addresses a pressing concern faced by seniors living independently or distanced from their families. This technology's ability to detect falls and alert caregivers via email significantly enhances the safety and well-being of elderly individuals, reducing the risks associated with falls and their potentially dire consequences.
