Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) play a crucial role within Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging networking paradigm that enhances the lifespan of WSNs by shifting the resource-intensive routing task from sensor nodes to a centralized controller. Nonetheless, existing controllers implement shortest-path routing algorithms that frequently result in imbalanced energy consumption, leading to a short network lifespan. To address this concern, this paper proposes a new energy-efficient routing algorithm referred to as NB-SDWSN, specifically designed for software-defined WSNs. NB-SDWSN utilizes the Naïve Bayes algorithm to dynamically distribute traffic evenly across relay nodes based on their energy levels and proximity to the sink node. Extensive experiments conducted using the SDN-WISE simulator demonstrate NB-SDWSN's superior performance over the widely known Dijkstra's algorithm. This superiority is reflected in extended network longevity, higher throughput, and reduced packet loss.
