An ATB-account of PG in the box theory
Kyoungmi Lee · The Journal of Linguistics Science · 2023
This study explores the similarities between parasitic gaps (PG) and Across-the-Board (ATB) constructions, particularly their multi-gap nature. Unlike typical set formations, both PG and ATB constructions arise in derivation not through Merge but via the FormSet (FS) operation, which lacks theta-related properties. Addressing and reconciling conflicting claims about their distinct properties, the study adopts a unified approach and incorporates Williams" (1990) perspective on coordination licensing PG constructions and treats PG as a variant of ATB gaps. Utilizing Chomsky’s (2023a, 2023b) box theory, the research offers a comprehensive account of PG constructions within the Strong Minimalist Thesis (SMT), adhering to the simplest structure-building operation, Merge, without relying on the distinction between A- and A’-movement.
