From Monolith to Service-Oriented Architecture: A Model-Based Design Approach towards Software-Defined Vehicles
Sreeraj Arole · 2023
The automotive industry has exhibited great limberness through significant technology transfiguration in line with customer expectations and regulations resulting in gratifying commercial growth in electrification. The industry now inspirited the next paradigm shift through Software Defined Vehicle concept with a strong conviction which can be understood as a ramification of the earlier success. Industry has now evolved from ECU-based architecture to Domain-based architecture and Model-Based Design has played a significant role in it. Now with the move to Zonal architecture and Service-Oriented Architecture, the paper focuses on the legacy battery charging system software monolith model, revamping it into a Service-oriented architecture compatible with Adaptive AUTOSAR framework within the native Model-Based Design Environment. The conversion involved transitioning from a signal-based architecture to an event and method-based architecture. Differences in detailed design and modelling styles are analyzed and addressed. Detailed design and modelling took place within the native MBD environment, followed by validation and verification of the integrated system. Code and executables were generated and validated for all the services and then integrated with the Linux operating system in a docker environment. The results demonstrated that while the legacy model-based design framework still has room for improvement, with careful design, legacy models can be converted to a service-oriented architecture without compromising their integrity and quality. The subsequent phase will involve integrating the code with a production-ready Adaptive AUTOSAR stack and conducting an analysis using an industry-qualified hardware platform.
