Challenges and Opportunities of Activity Recognition in Clinical Pathways
Christina Garcia, Sozo Inoue · 2024
In this paper, we survey the activities in various clinical pathways and identified that there is a large area of activities, medical professionals, and diseases affecting movement to be analyzed with human activity recognition methods. Clinical pathway (CPW) is an evidence-based bedside document detailing the activities and procedures undergone by the patient along with multiple medical professionals throughout the patient journey. Understanding the interaction of patients in the stages elaborated in CPWs can help support decisionmaking related to the patient’s clinical condition and streamline clinical pathways. Activities from various CPWs were extracted and combined with clinical pathway synonyms to serve as keywords to search the Scopus database. A total of 22 full papers are obtained from the original 48,109 reports filtered according to the set exclusion criteria. Results show that 17 papers on HAR studies related to CPWs have patients as the subject of interest (77.27%) and 14 papers have the primary research objective of monitoring for clinical purpose (63.64%). There is an opportunity to study the activities of medical professionals such as doctors, pharmacists, and medical technicians with HAR to reinforce electronic health records; and for assessment, monitoring, and supporting clinical decisions regarding gait, neurological, psychological, and musculoskeletal related conditions hindering movement. Lastly, objective data from HAR can be used as a supplementary reference to event logs in the development of CPWs.
