A scatterplot displays the relationship between two quantitative variables (Section 5.2.1). But what do you do when you want to observe the relation between three variables? One approach is the 3-D scatterplot. The ggplot2 package and its extensions can&s;t create a 3-D plot. However, you can create a 3-D scatterplot with the scatterplot3d function in the scatterplot3d package. Let&s;s say that we want to plot automobile mileage vs. engine displacement vs. car weight using the data in the mtcars data frame the comes installed with base R.
