It takes little discriminatory skill to detect the seemingly “new look” in verbal learning research that emerged during the past decade. If we were able to plot frequency distributions of studies along an “involvement of cognitive processes” dimension, we would undoubtedly find some degree of overlap between the distributions of the 1960’s and the 1950’s. Nevertheless, the d’ value would surely be large, and the hit rate for recognizing “new” versus “old” research would be high.
