Does music have meaning? And if so, what kind of meaning? In this dissertation, weprovide experimental data supporting the view that music has a semantics: (i) music isable to refer to an extra-musical reality, and (ii) it does so in a rule-governed fashion. Wepresent four experimental paradigms designed to test these two assumptions by havingmusic interact with other cognitive faculties such as language, visual perception, or bodymotion.
