Basic Concepts of Cybersecurity in the Internet of Things

Keke Gai, Jing Yu, Liehuang Zhu · 2024

This chapter discussed an overview of cybersecurity concepts and challenges in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT is a rapidly growing network of interconnected devices that are capable of collecting and processing data in real-time. However, this interconnectedness also creates new security challenges in this digital realm, as these devices can be vulnerable to cyber-attacks. The first section begins by introducing the history of IoT and it started the attention of various parties, including governments. The IoT architecture and design are highly complexity and require multiple technologies to store, process and retrieve the data captured from portable devices. It then explores the unique security challenges posed by the IoT, such as device heterogeneity, data privacy, and distributed denial of service attacks. Later, an overview of the various cybersecurity solutions that can be used to protect IoT devices and networks has been discussed, including encryption, access control, and threat detection. It discusses the importance of risk assessment and security audits in ensuring the effectiveness of these solutions.
