The term “Internet of Things” (IoT) is used to signify a global network of common objects furnished with sensors, processors, and network connections. Gateways facilitate the collection and transmission of data among these devices and the internet. Routing solutions facilitate communication between IoT devices so that data may flow smoothly. In the context of the IoT, “routing” is a computation used to transmit information from one place in a network to another. The timely and accurate transmission of data is dependent on effective routing between IoT devices, other devices, and central systems. Network size, device capabilities, energy limits, and communication patterns are only some of the considerations that lead to the deployment of a particular routing protocol or strategy in an IoT network. In this paper, an attempt has been made to present various routing strategies used in IoT. Furthermore, we discuss IoT layer architecture. Further, provide performance analysis on various hierarchal routing protocols using MATLAB. Numerous IoT devices, including batteries, are constrained by limited power resources. The implementation of hierarchical routing can contribute to energy conservation through the reduction of data processing and communication demands on individual devices. The performance is evaluated based on the total number of alive nodes and dead nodes. At last, we addressed the future directions of routing in the IoT.
