A brief explanation of the book’s authorship and our writing

Selen Kars-Ünlüoğlu, Carol Jarvis, Hugo Gaggiotti · 2024

Where there is more than one author, the convention in academic circles is that either the authors are listed alphabetically by surname, or they are listed in order of their contribution. With three authors, two are typically relegated to et al. in in-text citations and there is privilege attached to being named as first author. As we have all made equal, though different, contributions to both the book and the development of the concept of unleadership, we decided to take a different, more unpredictable approach, one that felt more in keeping with the spirit of unleadership. We each picked two numbers from 1-6 and then rolled a die two times. The order of the numbers when we rolled the die determined the author order.Even if the book in its current form makes individual contributions undistinguishable, it is possible to see the ideas, insights and analyses of Selen Kars-Ünlüoğlu more visible in Chapters 1 and 3, Carol Jarvis' in Chapter 2, and those of Hugo Gaggiotti in Chapters 4 and 6.The short vignettes that illustrate how unleadership practices can and do unfold in practice are by and large the product of Carol Jarvis' creative mind.
