An Enhanced Software Architecture to Improve the MQTT Communications Encrypted Model

Han-Sheng Lu, Tse-Chuan Hsu · 2023

In the Internet of Things communication mechanism, considering the network performance of most devices based on a limited environment, the MQTT communication protocol is used to build a fast sharing network and data exchange mechanism. The problem with this technology is that the protocol does not allow point-to-point data exchange and message transfer. Each terminal node can only forward the message to terminals subscribing to the topic. In addition, the content of the MQTT protocol has no built-in encryption mechanism. There is no specification of which nodes can subscribe to topics, the guarantee of confidentiality of the information transfer process. Based on the software development framework, this study constructs and improves blockchain public and private key, broadcast, and verification characteristics to improve the above shortcomings, communication exchange quality, and message encryption reliability. Each device has the public keys of other devices through broker broadcast. Before using the public key to encrypt the message into ciphertext, it verifies whether everyone's public key is the same to achieve one-to-one transmission and avoid using a manipulated public key. In the research, the relevant theoretical verification establishes through experiments. In addition, we have demonstrated that, under the same broadcast architecture, there is no practical way of opening the broadcasts accessed by non-authorized nodes.
