With the increasing rise of IoT applications, the traditional centralized cloud computing (CC) model is encountering challenges like higher latency, poor capacity and network failure. CC is the most widely used technology, allowing consolidated data storage, administration, and management. The IoT and real-time interactive applications are gaining popularity due to their potentiality to enhance the daily lives of people. Instant services are required by users, applications, devices, and environments. Such instant service could not be provided by the centralized cloud system to a remote device or user. These issues can be addressed by Fog Computing (FC), which brings together the devices, servers, and users as close as possible. FC is a kind of distributed computing in which intermediate intelligent nodes (called fogs) manage and execute IoT applications. These fogs function as an intermediate between the cloud and the IoT devices located in data centers. In this survey, a number of computing paradigms are discussed (namely cloud computing and fog computing), features of FC, a reference structure of fog, a brief analysis of fog with IoT, and a thorough analysis of various difficulties of FC, which serves as a layer of intermediary between different IoT sensors or devices and cloud data centers.
