Applications of Social Network Analysis in Second Language Research

Kristen Kennedy Terry, Robert J. Bayley · 2024

This chapter examines the various second language (L2) learning contexts in which social network analysis (SNA) has made important contributions to our understanding of the L2 learning process. The chapter introduces the diverse populations of L2 learners that have been examined through the lens of SNA, including study abroad learners and others residing temporarily in the target-language (TL) environment, immigrant student groups in the TL educational system, and at-home language learners. Finally, the chapter introduces 16 Model Studies that represent the flexibility and predictive power of SNA and that can serve as a guide to researchers and students seeking to implement SNA in their own L2 research.
