A survey on the efficiency of the use of RFID technology in traffic management systems

With its many advantages and advances, UHF RFID (Ultra-High Frequency Radio Frequency Identification) technology has become a potent instrument in traffic control systems. This technology makes use of radio waves to wirelessly identify and track vehicles that have RFID tags, making it possible to monitor, manage, and optimize traffic in an effective manner. The use of UHF RFID technology in traffic management systems is essential for many applications.Monitoring and controlling traffic flow is a prominent application of UHF RFID technology in traffic management. Real-time traffic data, such as vehicle speed, volume, and occupancy, can be gathered by strategically placing RFID readers and antennae across road networks. This information is used to analyses traffic patterns, spot crowded regions, and make wise decisions to improve traffic flow. Based on the gathered data, traffic signal timing can be changed dynamically to ease congestion and increase efficiency. The paper investigates the effect of UHF RFID technology used as an auxiliary monitoring and control system of a road section. The considered road section is the access point that connects the western region with the Bucharest city Centre via the A1 highway. The road section presents a series of characteristics specific to congested traffic in an interurban scenario. Real traffic data were taken to demonstrate the high level of lane occupancy on the road segment, which serves as a critical access point in Bucharest. The novelty of this concept consists in the real-time monitoring and control of vehicles by means of a reception algorithm based on fuzzy logic-based approach to detecting a passive RFID Tag mounted on the considered cars using UHF RFID antennas.
