CRAY-3: A Gaas Implemented Supercomputer System
Dave Kiefer, John Heightley · 1987
The CRAY-3 computer, currently in development, has a performance goal of > 10 Giga-Flops. For ultra-high speed at modest power levels, GaAs IC logia was selected. Performance levels of45% have been achieved with peak yields in the 75-80% range. Unique high density packaging techniques (developed in-house at Cray Research) are used to preserve the high performance of GaAs ICs at the system level. This system contains ~ 48,000 logic chips and ~40,000 memory chips and will be the first major electronic system to be implemented with GaAs logic.
